"I will hide in the darkest, darkest hole
in Louisville (during Derby). I love the
tourists, but I just don't care to be
around them. It's amateur hour."
Jo-An Holleman
Bartender, Levy Restaurants,
at Churchill Downs
"My Derby experience starts at 4:30 a.m.
when I'm getting ready for a 16-hour day
and hoping the makeup and hair last all
day. I report at 6 a.m. raring to go. Then
it's on to opening tons of Bloody Mary mix,
(prepping for) mint juleps, opening cases
of julep glasses and the list go on and on
and on. The fun part starts when the gates
open (at Churchill Downs). Mint juleps
start fowing and Bloody Mary's are never-
ending. The hats and dresses are amazing.
I take pictures, if there is time, of all the fun
people. We (bartenders) have so much fun
while our feet are hurting, but I would not
trade it for anything. I am so lucky to have
a job I love so much."
